Women in History

Women have always played an important role in history. There were good women, bad women, destroyers of society and shapers. There were women who were unwillingly caught up in the events of history and those who made them happen. Some women were just downright interesting. This blog will post about them all. Requests are welcome.
We post twice a week. All asks are answered publicly unless otherwise indicated. Tag this blog with #historicwomenblog.
Empress Jingu c. 200
Empress Jingu was an early Japanese ruler who came to power with the death of her husband. She acted as regent and for a time, kept his death a secret. She put down revolts by acting in his name. She was pregnant when she began to rule, but still put on men’s clothes and fought in battle.
Jingu led Japan into war with Korea with great success, though her reign faced many revolts. It was only after she suppressed the revolts that Jingu died at the age of 100. Her heroics are honored in Japanese cultural dress. In honor of Jingu binding her stomach and fighting while pregnant, many Japanese women adopted a pregnancy girdle which eventually developed into an Obi.
